2012 Pinewood Derby Rules

Purpose:

There's nothing wrong with wanting to build the fastest pinewood derby car you can. But it is important to remember why the Pinewood Derby races exists. The Pinewood Derby was started to promote learning, competition, and sportsmanship.

Learning is an important part of the pinewood derby races. The Cub Scout should not only learn about such concepts as friction and gravity, but they should learn how to work with power tools safely. Depending on the experience of the Cub Scout, it may be necessary for adult supervision while building the pinewood derby car. This is a great way for an adult and a Cub Scout to spend time together.

In competition, there is always a person that wins and a person that loses. Competition drives us to do our best. By participating and competing, we broaden our knowledge, skills, and become a better person. The only loser is the person that refuses to better him or herself.

Sportsmanship involves both following the rules and how you behave at the pinewood derby. No matter how your car performs, you want to behave in a manner that will allow you to feel good in days to follow.

Rules

1. The Pinewood Derby Committee has final say or interpretation of all rules and regulations.

2. All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows:

a) The car must have been made during the current year (the year in which the derby is held).

b) The width of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.

c) The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.

d) The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces (5.0000).

e) The wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles) may NOT be changed from the kit body distance of 4-1/4”.

f) Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be as provided in the BSA kit. Only Official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used. Wheels maybe slightly sanded to remove the mold projection form the tread. This light sanding is the only wheel modification allowed. Beveling, tapering, wafering, or lathe turning of the wheels is prohibited (The ribs on the wheel sides MUST remain intact).

g) Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.

h) The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.

i) Any details added must be within length, width, and weight limits.

j) The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices or other propulsion.

k) No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.

l) The front end of the car must rest against the ‘car side’ of the starting pin. No portion of the car can be past the ‘car side’ of the starting pin.

3. Car weigh-in and inspections will be done on the Friday before Derby Day from 6 pm to 8 pm. Once a car has met the weight requirements and passed inspection, the car will be officially checked-in. Once a car has been officially checked-in, the car will not be handled by the driver until his car is ready to race in his first race. The cars will remain locked-up in the Hudson United Methodist Church overnight. On race day the cars will be moved by Pinewood Derby Race Officials to the Pit Area.

4. Before the Derby, the drivers will be allowed in the Pit Area to review and vote on the cars for various categories (Most Aerodynamic, Best Design, etc.)

5. Prior to racing in his first race, each driver will be allowed to apply lubricant to his wheels and axles in the pit area only. A table in the pit area will be set-up for this purpose. Only dry powered lubrication, such as graphite, maybe used.

6. Each heat will be announced. Drivers will report to the starting line and hand their car one at a time to the starter who will place the cars on the track in their assigned lane. All other people must remain behind the barrier.

7. The starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly and than will start the race.

8. The drivers will then report to the finish line to see the results of the race.

9. The car whose nose is over the finish line first is the winner. The track timer will determine the first-, second-, third-place winners.

10. If a car leaves the track but does not interfere with the other cars, it will be allowed a second run by itself to record a time.

11. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time but without the disqualified car.

12. After the results of each heat are recorded, the drivers will take their cars and return them to the Pit Area and then return to their seats.

13. If a car suffers a mechanical problem, loss of an axle, breaks a wheel, etc. during a race and a repair can be made in a reasonable amount of time, the heat will run again. If not, the car will automatically lose the heat.

14. Cars are not to leave the race track area at any time. If a car gets damaged during a race, all repairs must be done in the pit area. Pinewood Derby Officials will be required to inspect any car after repairs have been made to any damaged car. If necessary the car will have to be re-weighed to insure that it does not exceed the maximum weight limit. If a driver takes his car out of the pit area or the race track area anytime during the derby, he will be disqualified.

15. Awards will be announced shortly after the heat for which the awards are to be given. The drivers and their partners will report to the stage for the awards as their names are called.

16. The total of number of heats will depend on the number of participants.

17. The 12 fastest racers will move on the finals. The 12 fastest racers will be determined by adding the combined total race times from each car's initial 3 races (once in each lane). The 12 lowest combined times will advance to the final. The top 3 overall winners will be determined by adding the combined times from the final round. Note that the only purpose for running the finals round is to determine the top 3 overall racers. The finals round times do not apply to the top 3 racers in each den. Regardless of a racer's times in the finals round, only his times earned in the initial round apply toward the den awards. This is done because not all racers make it to the finals and have a chance to improve their times.

18. Den winners will be determined after the overall top 3 racers are determined. The overall top 3 finishers cannot also win top den awards.

19. Awards will be presented at the end of the Pinewood Derby.
Trophies will be awarded to the following:
a. Overall 1st Place Finish
b. Overall 2nd Place Finish
c. Overall 3rd Place Finish
d. Den 1st Place Finish (A total of 5)
e. Den 2nd Place Finish (A total of 5)
f. Den 3rd Place Finish (A total of 5)
g. Various Trophies based on cars design (To be determined by the scouts) (Only cars that did not win a place trophy will be eligible for these trophies)
h. All other participants will receive a ‘Participation Trophy’
The top three finishers of the Pack will be invited to the District Pinewood Derby Meet to be held in April (location TBD).

February Pack Meeting

Kids will stay with their team - each den leader gets a team to lead.
Pat will email schedule out. Team leader will decide which Scout gets to play which game (draw out of a hat?) 10 minute period.

Pinewood Derby: Steve talked to Brad Bradshaw, who will provide us with free Coke products! Tiger moms typically coordinate the concession stand. Charlene Mileski coordinated it last year. Baked goods from two other dens (not Tigers). Coordinator is Charlene and Anissa.

Blue & Gold will be at the Clarion, since it's $500 cheaper.

Our First REAL SCOUT campout...

Webelos IIs, If you are planning on camping this weekend with Troop 327, respond to Larry Penman as soon as possible. They collected fees and forms last night.
If you are staying overnight, the camping fee is $2 + $10 for food ($12). Larry needs this ASAP so the grubmaster can purchase food.

If you are only able to join us Saturday for a partial campout and do not want to pay the $10 for food (since you won’t be there for Saturday’s dinner), make sure you bring a LUNCH or whatever food you need. If you can’t camp overnight, PLEASE come join us for signal tower fun Saturday. The goal of this campout is to build at free-standing, 10-foot tall tower using lashing skills (remember Fall Camp?). Should be lots of fun.

Everyone attending is required to bring the Medical Form (same as submitted for the Fall Camp). Ed Kennedy has those from Fall Camp, I believe; however, you can always turn in a fresh copy (located here ).

Also required for the campout:
Your uniform shirt! (No neckerchief). No shirt, no camping.

A warm and dry camper is a HAPPY CAMPER….

• A waterproof container (ie. Backpack) to transport clothes/sleeping bag from the car to the camp site. Per troop policy, these are not allowed inside your tent; it should be waterproof and stored outside. You can bring a trash bag (several) and gym bag or other bag if you don’t have a backpack.
• A small folding chair – we do not typically have any place to sit – no picnic tables, so bring something light to sit on. You don’t want to stand around ALL weekend.
• Water Bottle
• Mess Kit equivalent
• 3-4 pair of socks (wools are best) – keeping your feet warm is CRUCIAL to keeping your body warm.
• 3-4 pair of Underwear
• 2 pair of pants – avoid jeans (or any cotton) if possible. Wet jeans make you cold. That said, I will probably be wearing jeans, but have insulated tights under them.
• Waterproof boots
• T-shirts (3 – long sleeve)
• Sweatshirt
• Coat / warm jacket
• Gloves
• Hat
• Raincoat – water proof!
• Sleepwear – sweat pants, warm socks, sweatshirt
• Sleeping bag, foam mat
• Toothbrush
• Medications (must be given to the leader to be dispensed)
• 2 Flashlights

We are meeting at HUMC at 6pm Friday night to go to Butler. Arrive having eaten dinner already – there will be no Friday night dinner prepared – only Cracker Barrel (snacks).

Those arriving Saturday will need to ask where we are camping by checking in at the Camp Butler camp master’s cabin (on the left, just after going up the hill after passing the lake). I will try to have my cell phone also (330-995-8148).

2) Popcorn Orders – please turn in to John Kozar by this Saturday!
3) Our next meeting is scheduled for this coming Monday, Nov. 1, the day after our campout this weekend. 7-8:30pm. The following meeting on Nov. 15 will be at Kent State where Mr. Mileski will present Geologist to our den. Directions to our meeting place will be provided before the meeting.
4) Another campout opportunity is with Troop 333 on 11/13, so also consider this one. We will gauge interest Monday night.
5) Our next Pack meeting is next Friday (11/5) at 7pm.

Weather will be from 36 to 55 degrees this weekend and looks like it will be 20% chance for rain – not bad. See you there!

November Pack Meeting - Circus Fun!

The theme for the pack meeting will be "Circus Fun". We will have six stations set up for the scouts to rotate through.

Following are some other items to either bring or to be prepared for:

1) Pack Dues - If you haven't paid them yet, please bring a check for $40.00/scout to the pack meeting. Make checks payable to "Pack 3327"

2) Popcorn - Please submit all forms and all money to John Kozar by Saturday, October 30. Remember, if your scout sells at least $300 worth, he'll get to throw a pie in the face of his favorite (or least favorite) leader, possibly at the December Pack Meeting. The kids love throwing pies in our faces. I can't figure out why???: ) Also remember, if your scout sells $600 worth, he'll get a $50 gift card from the pack and will also get a marshmallow crossbow from BSA and will also be able to participate in the "Scout Day at the "Q"" and will get a free ticket for each of the following: an Indians, Cavs, Gladiators, and Lake Erie Monster game. So if your scout is close to either goal, go out and get it.

3) Salvation Army Bell Ringing - Please check your schedule for December 11th as I will be bringing a sign-up form for the annual Salvation Army Bell Ringing on 12/11 from 11am to 5pm. I believe this is our 4th year doing this and the kids always have fun especially if they ring with one or more of their best scouting buddies. It will be at the Walmart on Hudson Drive in Cuyahoga Falls next to Route 8. You can sign up for as much time as you want. Typical blocks of time are 1/2 hour or an hour. Just from experience, a half hour goes by very quick. By the time you get there, talk with scout parent in prior time slot, then talk w/ scout parent in next time slot, it seems like you're only there for about 15 minutes. For Bears or anyone else who won't be at the pack meeting, please contact Steve Mileski with your preferred time slot in advance of the pack meeting.

4) Shooting Patches - We will hand out shooting patches that most of the scouts earned at the fall campout. Bears received theirs if they attended Friday's den meeting since they won't be at the pack meeting. If your Bear wasn't at the den meeting and won't be at the pack meeting, please contact me and I'll get him his shooting patch soon instead of making him wait until December.

5) Awards - Some den leaders will hand out other awards prior to the Circus Skills/Games.

6) Baked Goods Raffle - Please bring at least a few dollars for your scout to buy some raffle tickets for the Baked Goods Raffle that we have at almost every pack meeting at HUMC. One den brings baked goods to each meeting (Webelos 1s for this meeting) that are raffled-off. The scout will hold the goodies he brought and will pick the ticket out of a basket and call the number. Which ever scout has the winning ticket will win the baked good.

Fall Campout 2010

We had about 108 campers attend our beautiful Fall Camp this year at Camp Manatoc. Once again we stayed at Vally View / Vale Edge camp site on the entrance road to Manatoc.

Weather started out extremely hot Friday afternoon and night, then dropped 30 degrees to about 62 by Saturday morning. The Friday night hike was highlighted with the Ed Kennedy "Vinder Viper" horror story and some blazing campfires. Saturday was a beautiful sunny day where each den split off to do their own activities. The Saturday night campfire was excellent with many skits put together by each den and lowlighted by the leaders "If I were not a Boy Scout" song.

Many people put in some long hours in planning for the campout. The Kozars provided the Friday night "pasta and meatballs" dinner and prepared ALL of that great garlic bread on their grill beforehand. Jeff Cassell used double-boilers to keep all of the food WARM this year, which really turned out great compared to previous years where we never had anything warm. Ed Kennedy had a well-organized cleaning station setup to make washing hands and cleaning up an easy task. Thanks to all our volunteers who made this campout really nice!

Spring Camp Out
Leaders will do "If I were not a Boy Scout" -- Heater to provide lyrics.

Jeff will pick up Dutch Ovens from Randy Coleman.
Steve has Dutch Oven tool and will give to Jeff.
Heater will bring the gas grill.
Jon Wagner will pull the trailer down Friday. Jeff will coordinate getting it from Bob Lee. Jon will drive it around to Mileskis and Heater's house for firewood.
Steve Cox will bring the first aid kit - remind him! Have Benadryl on hand.

Meals:
Friday night: Hot Dogs, Chili
Saturday morning: Sausage, eggs, O.J.
Saturday night: Hamburgers, Chili
Sunday morning: Leftovers!

Kids should bring mess kits to the campout!

Kozar will assemble the Saturday group at the park and ride at 7:30am Saturday morning.

Mileski will check to see if water at base is potable.

Keith will give Larry Penman a call (Troop 327) to see if we could borrow their HUGE tent (the Taj-Mo Hall).

Friday and Saturday groups will meet up at 1pm at the Air Force Museum.

Parade Float -- send email out to dens to cancel float building. We may build a banner instead.

Top three from our Pack need to register by March 27: Steve will send emails.
In Novemeber, ALL cub scouts will race their cars.

April 9th Pack meeting will be either in Ellsworth Hill or outdoors at Hudson Springs.

Blue & Gold is 1 to 4:30pm
Setup is at 10am. We have 176 people signed up to attend.
We need to verify table count and see how many we need to provide from the church.

Awards will consist of badges and advancement ranks. Leaders need to go to the Online Advancement and fill in details for each Scout, then inform John Kozar which awards need picked up.

Parents need to bring desserts (except Tiger parents).

January 2010 Committe Meeting Minutes

Yearbooks: We will get black and white hardcopies and a color pdf file available to all Scouts.

Pinewood Derby:
Rule change: 17. The twelve fastest cars overall will advance to the pack championship heat.
Need to get other guys involved with the Derby

Parade:
Randy has a 5 X 9 trailer, but Steve may be able to obtain a larger one for our float.

Blue & Gold:
Happy Trails hall will only charge us the same fee as last year. We may cut down on the amount of food from the caterer.

Spring Campout

Spring Campout:
The Spring Campout will be May 14-16 at WPAFB (Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). Den leaders need to know the following for the WPAFB security application:

1) who will be attending
2) what their ages will be on May 14th
3) if they plan on arriving on Friday evening or Saturday around noon.
NOTE: Entire families are welcome to attend this campout!

Details:
We will probably try to go down as two groups, one on Friday and one on Saturday (although I know there is potential for a lot of different departure times on Friday depending on work and school schedules). Those that want to can meet up at Young's Dairy http://www.youngsdairy.com/ on Saturday around 11:30am to all have lunch together. Then we can drive over to the WPAFB Museum as a group and have about 4 hours of fun there before heading over to the camp site on the base.

January 2010 Committee Meeting Minutes

Hello Leaders,

Thanks for the great turn out at last night's committee meeting. We must have all been itching to get out of the house as much as our wives are glad that school's started again.

Pack meeting this Friday (1/7): CAKEWALK!!!
If everyone doesn't know by now, the Father-Son Cake Walk is Friday night at 7:00pm. This will take up the entire meeting. The only other thing we have to make time for is the opening, which the Tigers will be doing with the help of Grant Coleman and some other Webelos 2.

We will put duct tape on floor for numbers
Scouts will receive the number for the cake number they land on.
Den leaders, please notify your members to bake a cake for this Friday! See last year's photos for inspiration (Jan. 2009 archive).

We may call the numbers 4 at a time this year. If this is the case, we may have time for a game or three of SOCK. Dave Heater, if you have them, please bring them.

Other items for the meeting:
- All Leaders - Bring a box or two to help for transporting cakes home
- Randy Coleman - Blank Certificates
- Steve Mileski - Duct Tape and marker for the numbers, name plates and numbers for cakes
- Dave Heater - Music and Camera

Like last year, we will need the assistance of a few moms or big sisters (no names...Brittney Kozar) to help write down the categories for each cake and to help match up the scout's number w/ his prize cake.

As in years past, if any scout is so in love with his cake that he can't bear to give it away, then he won't be able to participate in the cake walk. He can just sit off to the side knowing that in about 2 hours he'll be digging into his delicious masterpiece.

NOTE: SAVE CAN TABS AND DONATIONS FOR THE FEBRUARY MEETING
Bowling Event:
We decided at the pack meeting to have our own Bowling Party instead of participating in the MOE Bowling Event. The main reason for this is due to the MOE Bowling Event being held this Saturday which doesn't leave us any time to get a list of scout families for sign up w/ payment. We have decided on January 16th probably from 11:00 to 1:00pm. The time will be nailed down once Randy "Strong Arm" Coleman (more shrewd than an Arab trader) works a deal w/ Stonehedge or another local alley. Scouts will be paid for by the pack. Siblings and parents are welcome to bowl but will have to pay. I will go around to families present at the pack meeting and see how many will be bowling and collect payment if possible. We don't know exactly what the cost will be. This depends on how well Randy can coerce the bowling alley. Likely, the more bowlers, the lower the price. At this time it could be anywhere between $10 and $14.

Scout Sunday at HUMC:
Scout Sunday will be on February 7th this year at HUMC. The exact service is unknown at this time. This is a very special date as it is the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts in America. We need to make a good showing this year to let the church know how much we appreciate their sponsorship. Last year we only had 5 scouts in attendance. I think we can easily have 5 times that this year. So please mark the date on your calendar. The service will be announced as soon as we find out.

Pinewood Derby:
It's not too early to be thinking about the Pinewood Derby. Practice run is 2/27, with the actual Derby on 3/6. Buy cars at Kamper City.

Fall Camp at Manatoc

We had a SUPER time at Fall Camp this year, even with pending bad weather. Some people sat up in the rain, but we were really spared any heavy rains. Saturday morning we all awoke to sunny skies and really not too cold temperatures (50s).

Saturday, each of the dens had an activity: the Tigers did orienteering with compasses, the Wolves did hiking and sock-puppet creations, the Bears and Webelos earned (or re-earned) their Whittlin' Chip cards (carving with a pocket knife) and Webelos lashed together a puppet stage. Everyone participated in archery and BB-gun sessions as well as meal preparation and cleanup.

Thank you, Ed Kennedy for being our camp coordinator this year. Thank you, Kozars, for doing the heavy-lifting on getting the food supplies purchased and delivered to the camp. And thanks, leaders, for the good activities.

Dave M. will be the official camp health form collector and greeter at our camp site.
If any mothers want to stay overnight, they must stay in the health lodge or a tent; they can't stay in a cabin with the boys.

9/16: 6-9pm Ellsworth Hill Scout recruitement night. As many parents, leaders and Cub Scouts who want to volunteer for our night of recruiting are encouraged to attend.

Popcorn: Should we do table sales? Let's preasent this to the Pack as a whole, since there was no feedback from the email. Lynn Schmidt is the Popcorn General this year. John will first check with local stores. Popcorn kickoff will be at our first pack meeting; forms will be distributed at the den meetings.

John K. will look into class B shirts and pick up an order form.

Pop can tabs to benefit Ronald McDonald House at the Cleveland Clinic: We will provide incentives for the den that collects the most tabs. Parents are also encouraged to bring in travel toilettries for this project.

Our pack is going to make a donation to the HUMC.

Other service projects for the fall? (Leaf raking for three families on November 7th.)

Pack Officer openings: Secretary and assistant Pocorn Kernel.

Scout recruting night at Evamere will be sometime around 8/25 from 4-6pm.

Steve may be gone until Oct. 31 on an extended business outing.

Family Campout will be July 24-25 -- next weekend!

Pizza party/flag raising will be either 8/28 or 9/4.

Child protection training will be 8/31 or 9/29 (for renewals), if needed.

September 11 will be the FIRST offical pack meeting/cookout to kick off the new year at 6pm. If weather is bad, we will meet over at the church.

We added all the District meeting dates to the Pack Calendar, including all popcorn dates.

The Council Haunted hayrides are the 3 weekends preceeding Halloween: 9/10, 16/17, 23/24.

We will ask Pat Cassell to put together a music video multimedia presentation to show at the popcorn kickoff.

Western Reserve Academy has offered it's facility for any of our den meetings, courtesy Bill Bugg.

Great Trail Council still needs payment for the canoes....

There was a discussion about the Blue & Gold banquet serving as the a Crossover event for Webelos II instead of the advancement event. We would then have an advancement meeting later in the year...as our last pack meeting at Hudson Springs on June 4.

Hocking Hills Campout Summary

The weather was really nice this year -- 60-70 and sunny on Saturday, light showers Sunday morning, then clearing. Thanks to everyone who participated and made this a very fun Spring Campout. We left Hudson at about 8:30 Saturday morning, stopping at restaurants on the way down (in Logan), then began hiking at about 1:00pm at Old Man's Cave.

We then explored nearby Ash Cave, where two weddings were just breaking up, then headed to set up tents at the Youth Group primitive site (primitive means only pit toilets). After (mostly) successfully setting up tents, we started Chili and hot dog preparations. The chili was one of the best campout dinners I've ever had - nice cookin' guys! A campfire was enjoyed by all, along with camper pies, s'mores and popcorn roasted over the fire. Scouts enjoyed playing Ghost in the Graveyard, among other games well into the night.

The next morning, we awoke to a very light rain, not even worthy of rain coats. About eight families decided to stay and hike more, while most of the Pack headed back home. We visited Cedar Falls, then went upstream and crossed Queer Creek on the hanging bridge. Then four families did the 2.5 mile hike to Old Man's Cave, passing by Happy Lake.

Last Minute Details from CubMaster "Hill Blaster" Mileski

Here is the first of probably several e-mails regarding the Spring Campout on Saturday.

***NOTE THIS CHANGE*** WE ARE NO LONGER MEETING AT HUMC IN THE MORNING. INSTEAD, WE ARE MEETING AT THE PARK AND RIDE PARKING LOT AT SR 303 AND SR 8 ON THE NE CORNER OF SR 303 AND CHITTENDEN ROAD. PLEASE TRY TO GET THERE AT 7:30 AM SO WE CAN LEAVE PROMPTLY AT 8:00 AM.

DIRECTIONS:If you can open the following link to our Hocking Hills Campsite, it will give you directions to within about 600 yds from where we will meet at Hocking Hills at about 1:00pm on Saturday. This was the closest address I had. The large parking lot that we are going to meet in is located on the north side of SR 664 about 600 yards west of this address (Ranger/Check-in Station) and is immediately past Culp Road which intersects with SR 664 from the north.

Don't forget rain gear and bug spray. Hopefully we'll need the bug spray more than the rain gear. It looks like it's going to rain on Friday and maybe Saturday morning. Hopefully it'll pass before we get down there in the afternoon, but be prepared just the same. The good thing about the rain is the falls and streams will be flowing pretty nicely.

Randy Coleman is bringing his trailer down to Hocking Hills to pick up firewood. He'll have it in his garage Friday evening ready for anyone that has gear that they can't fit in their vehicle. We may use it to haul the food coolers unless we get to the park and ride lot and find that there is enough room for them inside other vehicles. If anyone has anything they need to bring down that won't fit in their vehicle, give Randy a call to see what time you can bring it over Friday evening.

At last count we have a cozy little group of 70. So I'll be buying food for that number. As a reminder, we'll be having hot dogs/chili dogs and smores on Saturday night and eggs and bacon on Sunday morning. We'll also provide drinks for the campsite. Please remember to bring any snacks that you and your scout like and maybe some drinks for hiking. We'll be stopping for lunch in or around Lancaster that should hold us over until dinner. Don't forget to bring forks for cooking your hot dogs and mess kits or the like for cooking breakfast.

Also, everyone is free to drive down on your own. You don't need to follow the pack down in convoy formation. I know it can be difficult.

Spring Campout Details - Hocking Hills 2009

Camping Details from the CubMaster:

Campsites:
There is no deadline to sign up for the Spring Campout to Hocking Hills State Park, however, the two campsites hold 60 people each for a total of 120 campers. I apologize, I may have e-mailed or told some people we had 2 - 100 person campsites reserved, however we have 2 adjacent 60 person sites reserved.

Therefore, it is first come, first serve for the 1st 120 scouts and parents. I will have a current head count hopefully by this weekend. This also means that we should limit it to scouts and parents first. If by early next week we are below 120 campers, we can start adding some siblings into the mix. I would imagine we'll have a little extra room. We would have to have 60 scouts go camping w/ 1 parent per scout to reach 120. Plus there are at least 4 dads w/ 2 scouts so that frees up 4 spaces.

We can drive right up to the campsite. However, the park rangers couldn't give me a maximum number of cars that we could park in the field, but they said there was quite a bit of room. We might need to work on car pooling a bit more. If you can, ride down with someone else.

Beverage Details:
Also water is about 1 mile away at Ash Cave. We can haul water in the drink coolers and we'll have 3 wash basins for dishes. One w/ soap for washing, one w/ disinfecting tablets, and one with clean rinse water. We can use them for washing up on Saturday night, then we can clean them out and refill them for cleaning mess kits and utensils on Sunday. For personal convenience, I recommend that everyone bring an extra gallon or 2 of water for washing or drinking, even though we'll provide drinks. And if you plan on hiking on Sunday, be prepared to bring water or drinks to carry along with you. We will provide bug juice in the coolers and we'll also provide bottles of water for visiting the caves and falls on Saturday, however, there may not be enough to carry over into Sunday. If there is left over bug juice on Sunday, we can refill our own water bottles, camel backs, or canteens to use it up.

Meals:
If you don't already know, the Pack will be providing hot dogs/chili dogs, drinks and smores on Saturday night. On Sunday we will be providing eggs and bacon and orange juice. We don't plan on bringing any plates or cups or plastic ware, so please bring your own utensils and mess kits w/ cup and bowl/plate, store bought or homemade will do just fine.

Parents, you know what your scouts like to eat for snacks, so please bring snacks for you and your scout to tie you over between meals.

Saturday Lunch:
I haven't been able to find anyplace cool or unusual to stop for lunch. Worst case scenario, we can stop at a Dairy Queen or the like in Lancaster. I know I'll never turn down a flame broiled burger and a large strawberry milkshake. If anyone knows of anyplace, please let me know.

Schedule:
We can't check in until 3:00 pm. So I figure the daily schedule will be something like this:

SATURDAY
7:30 am - Meet in HUMC parking lot
8:00 am - Leave promptly from HUMC
11:00 am - Noon - Eat lunch in or around Lancaster
1:00 pm - Arrive at Hocking Hills State Park in the huge, long parking lot on the north side of State Route 664 across from Old Man's Cave.
5:00 - 6:00 pm - Check in and start setting up camp. We can't check in before 3:00 pm but we can check in as late at 7:00 pm. However, if we check in by 6:00 pm that'll give us plenty of time to set up camp and start dinner, etc.
8:00 pm - Skits, songs, etc
10:00 pm - Quiet time in park

SUNDAY
Breakfast, hiking, fishing, and depart at your own leisure.

No Hauling Firewood:
Note that we were planning on bringing down firewood, however due to the Emerald Ash Borer Quarantine, we cannot. Even though Summit County is not yet under quarantine, we are not allowed to bring the wood through any counties that are, which we would have to do in order to get to Hocking Hills. So, we will purchase firewood in the park or outside of the park in Hocking County. So, please don't bring any firewood down individually.

Fishing Opportunity:
Also, if there is anyone who wants to go fishing on Sunday and you don't have a license, you are in luck, May 2nd and 3rd are Free Fishing Days in Ohio. Kids under 16 years of age don't need a license regardless.

April 2009 Committee Meeting Minutes

Bob Lee brought the flag holders to the meeting -- we actually have flag holders. Now John Kozar has them.

Next pack meeting (April 17) will be at 6:30pm -- not 7pm. Scouts should be there at 6:15pm.

Jen suggested using Enchanted Learning for a resource to grab Jurrasic Pack theme printouts and games. We could start these activities at 6:15 to encourage Scouts to settle in early. Randy will pick up little prizes to offer up as incentive to complete said games.

Crossover will last 30 minutes max; we will still have a bake sale (Tigers). Bob has been in contact with both 333 and 327 regarding the crossover ceremony. Webelos will do the opening.

Larry shared with us his experience of going to the Kent Bog with the Tigers for a Jurrasic Outing.

Spring Campout to Hocking Hills State Park

Leaders need to remind their members to make up a mess kit to bring on the campout:
One side note regarding Spring campout. Once again remind dens to either purchase mess kits (Wal-mart, Target, Kamper City, Dick's etc) or make up their own before the campout. Remember everyone will be on their own for meal preparation (food will be provided). The following is Ed Kennedy's suggestion for making up your own "homemade" mess kit:

Here is a list of what the scouts can use for a simple mess kit:
-a low, flat Tupperware or other plastic bowl that serves as both a plate and a bowl (you only need one item to eat from)
-a plastic mug for drinking, or just use the canteen or water bottle that you should have brought on the campout
-an old fork and/or spoon
-a small dishcloth to wash and/or dry everything
-a Ziploc bag to hold all of the above
-if you are going to cook over a fire, bring a small skillet or frying pan and a spatula from home
-Bears and Webelos should have pocket knives to use; for Tigers and Wolves, the parent/guardian should have a knife

Randy volunteered to go down early to campsite if needed for registration.

John Kozar will fill out the tour permit.

Meet at church at 7am Saturday morning, May2, for departure soon thereafter.

Physicals: Make sure ALL people (adults and cubs) bring a Class I medical form.

All den leaders: All dens should plan to have a shakedown meeting before the campout. This is where the Cub Scouts should show up with EVERYTHING they plan to take on the campout.

Helpful hints:
Bug sprays disable the waterproofing on the tents.

Questions:
1. What time does the registrar open?
2. What are our acitivities? Hike after lunch somewhere there... Den leaders, provide any scheduled activities your own den would like to do.

Next Committee Meeting will be April 26 to finalize campout details.

P.S. From Jennifer Morris:

John asked the Den leaders to have activities ready for their dens for the gathering time for the pack meeting. Have the kids arrive at 6:15 and begin at 6:30pm. During this gathering time - the kids can do printable pages/puzzles based on the theme of the meeting. (this on is Jurasic Pack) For ever two pages they complete - they can turn them in for a small "prize" - Randy's getting a barrel of plastic dinos for incentives. I would suggest having 5-6 different puzzle pages ready for your den. This way the kids can choose what they want to do - and can have friendly competition for who can get the dinos from the den. You will want to let the dens know this - so they can get there on time to start the activity.

I made the suggestion at our meeting that each den leader have a small first aid kit (dollar store) , an instant ice pack (dollar store) and Gold Bond First Aid Spray in their day pack for the Hocking Hills Campout. This spray covers infection, insects bites, and burns. It's the only thng that works with my boys because it doesn't sting at all and smells good. Here's a picture of it:

We rented the Happy Days Lodge this year for a change from previous years. Had the event catered and decorated/cleaned up the lodge on our own. With beautiful weather outside, it was hard to keep a bunch of active Scouts and their families inside. The food was excellent!

Here is a great opportunity to show your son how a Cub Scout can help other people.
Please bring the following items in to either DEN meetings or PACK meetings as you are able to. Dave Heater will collect them and forward them on to the MOECOMDWS council at the end of the month.

For Gifts of the Heart we will be collecting:
March -- nail clippers and combs
April-- bandaids and toothbrushes
May -- nail clippers and 1-gallon size zippered bags (i.e. Zip-lock)
June to September-- wash cloths, wide-toothed combs, nail clippers and toothbrushes

MOE scouters & scouts have done a tremendous job in helping to supply Church World Services with health kits over the past several years, each year sending over 100 individual kits. As mentioned last month, some of those kits were used for relief from the heavy ice storms that hit the south a few months back.

February 2009 Committe Meeting Minutes

Steve purchased Peterson Bird guides and Larry has a wildflower guide that he'll share.

We will do a pack outing at Step Right Up (hotdogs and doughnuts) during the week sometime this month. Cubs will get to see the doughnuts being made. 10% of the purchases will be donated back to the pack.

The Blue & Gold Banquet at Happy Days Visitor Center will cost about the same (ESTIMATE is $12 per person, 4 and under free). 1 to 4:30pm. Entertainment is probably going to be a Scout specialist who will show us how to start fires and other survivalist skills. Some families will bring baked goods for desserts for the B&G; cookies and brownies. We also need to clean up the facilities afterwards. We need to borrow some tables from the church. We will reserve a date with the Hudson Holiday Inn next year; March 14th is ideal.

Pinewood Derby is 3/7 with practice on 2/28. Dave M. will pick up patches. Dave H. will forward trophy information to Steve M.

Tiger Cubs Crash Klondike!

The Tiger Cubs made their awesome presence known on Saturday, 1/24/09, at the Boy Scout's Klondike Derby. The snow was about a foot deep this year with some really COLD (17 degree) weather. Hopefully most of these guys return to experience the entire weekend as a Boy Scout some day. Roll on, boys!

Hello Leaders,

We discussed lending our PWD track to Pack 3321 with most everyone agree that there would be too much of a risk of breakage. Other issues involved the software, timing, and extra work moving the track and having one of our leaders staying w/ the track during their PWD. We'll see if they want our old track instead.

We discussed buying new flag poles, or at least purchasing new eagles or finials on top if the existing can be removed

We are going to buy a set of Peterson Guides to Birds, Trees, etc. for each den to use whenever they go on hikes

We are going to buy a charcoal brickette chimney for the Dutch ovens.

Larry Schmidt informed us that the HUMC Scout Sunday is February 8th at the 9:00am service. Please let everyone in your dens know. All leaders and scouts dress in full uniform.

Leaders sign up for the University of Scouting by January 29th to get lunch. After the 29th, no lunch but same price. The pack will pay the $25.00 fee. The U of S is on February 7th from 7:45am to 4:00pm (registration is from 7:15 to 7:40am). It seems long, but the day flies by since you get to select the courses that interest you.

We plan on having a Pack Dinner Night at Ci Ci's Pizza in February, maybe the week of February 9th. They will give 10% of sales back to our pack. John Kozar will let us know the details.

For this Friday's Pack Meeting.....
Bears will perform the opening w/ the help of a Webelo.

Den leaders, please prepare an activity/game for each of your dens to keep them entertained from their arrival to the opening of the meeting. Dave Mulcahey told me tonight that Troop 333 will provide Den Chiefs for the Bears and Wolves at the meeting. Show the Den Chief your activity/game for them to lead the cubbys. We'll designate the four corners of the CAC, one for each den, so that the scouts aren't running around prior to the meeting.

We won't perform skits due to the cake walk taking so much time. However, we will hand out awards. I will present the year pins to everyone.

We need to have someone make sure the scouts sit down and watch the remainder of the cake walk after they've chosen their cake. If not a leader, a Den Chief can do it.

We used Heaters and one other radio last year. If I remember correctly, we played the Buckeye Fight Song. But we can play any music. If anyone has music of choice and a nice radio, please bring it to the meeting. Let everyone know in advance.

After we finish the cake walk, we can finish the pie throwing for those scouts who haven't done so. John Kozar will bring the tarp.

John Kozar will also bring stickers/name tags for scout-cake tracking. I'll bring masking tape and pre-number some scrap paper from work up to 50 to tape to the floor. Looks like we currently have 65 active scouts so bring at least that many tags.

Do we need to make a run down to the scout shop, or do we have all of the awards in hand?

Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

Blue & Gold Banquet- It looks like we will be signing a contract at Happy Days Lodge in the Cuyahoga Valley NP.
- Lodge rental is $375.00. We will use one of their preferred caterers and will work on making the menus a bit more kid friendly.
- To keep the cost down to $375.00, we will help clean up and will bring some side dishes, etc. More info to come.

Code of Conduct- Steve M. will e-mail everyone the Wolf Code of Conduct they created this year. Everyone can add to it and send back to Steve. Maybe we can finalize it at the next committee meeting.

Den Chiefs- We found out that Troop 327 is a young troop, therefore, we are going to look to Troops 321 and 333 for some den chiefs. One for Wolf Den and one for Bear Den. They can primarily be in charge of redirecting scouts energy to activities before meetings versus running around like lunatics.

Service Project for HUMC- We are going to clean the hundreds of plastic candle holders for the church's Christmas Service. May have a special Saturday meeting for those scouts that can make it. More info to follow.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing- December 13th between 1-5pm at the Cuyahoga Falls Walmart on Hudson Drive. Sign up sheet will be sent out later this week.

Life Centers Reward for ALL Scouts for Fantastic Popcorn Sales- Kozar is setting up a few hours at Life Centers for the scouts. Pack will pay for everything and will include rock climbing, dodge ball, and wally ball. Either on a Saturday or Sunday in January or February. TBA

Centennial Award- Steve Mileski will get all information to Andy Morse to see if we qualify and if not, what we need to do to qualify.

Pack Master Program- We decided to invest in "Pack Master" to help keep track of Leader Training, Scout Advancements and Awards, etc.

*All Leader Training will now be officially paid for by pack. If you have receipts hand them in to either Steve Mileski or Dennis Withem

*We may consider doing a Pack Dinner at Ci Ci's Pizza in Streetsboro. Kozar found out that if we eat there as a non-profit organization, they will give us 10% of sales back to pack....and maybe more if we help bus, etc.

*If you buy a Christmas Tree from Troop 320 at the Log Cabin on the Town Square and if you have a scout in any Pack (not sure if Hudson Pack or any pack), you will get a $10 discount if you tell them.

*GOOD NEWS....The Hocking Hills campsites for our Spring Campout were finally added to the Ohio State Park inventory. We have reserved 2 adjacent, 60 person campsites for May 2nd for $50 each plus $16 in fees for a total of $116.00

October Committe Meeting Notes

Oct. 10 Pack Meeting Prep:
Bears will be bringing baked goods to the pack meeting on Friday Oct. 10th
Wolves - Skits
Webelos - Opening w/ a cadence march (like Day Camp) w/ maybe a skit that they've been working on.

Steve M. suggested that one Webelo (rotate or most deserving scout) lead the younger dens in a cadence march (like at Day Camp) for future openings to make it more exciting and to keep the attention of the dens not participating in opening.

Steve M. will hand out year pins. Other awards by den include Bobcat patches to some new Wolves and Bears who need them, possible pins for Ryan Madis if Pete can get all of the info he needs, possible lifesaving award for Tristan Pearl, Tiger patches for Tommy Awender and Cray Donoughe since they transferred to our pack last year and never received them from previous pack.

Either Doug or Kozar will run down to scout shop this week to pick up awards, pins, patches - Pete needs to let them know if they are to pick up Ryans and Tristans awards. Steve M. will get them more info from Tommy and Cray's parents since we need date they received Tiger.

Randy Coleman will be picking up the raffle tickets for the baked goods sale.

All scouts who have 14 popcorn orders and have not thrown a pie in a leader's face can do so at the pack meeting. All those who don't reach that level by this pack meeting can throw a pie at the November pack meeting. Den leaders need to get me a total number of boys who are eligible so I can make sure we have enough shaving cream.

Kozar will bring tarp, Steve M. will bring the shaving cream and pie pans.

We decided to do the haunted hayride at Camp Butler at the den level, if den leaders want to...

Same w/ the MOE Fishing Derby on October 18th.

Pete said the MOE Mystery Weekend Campout on Oct. 17th & 18th is more for Boy Scouts & Webelos than cubbys. That appears to be the case.

Good Turn Day is Nov. 1st between 9am and Noon. The den leaders will pass the info along down to the dens. Most likely an individual event but if den leaders want they can turn it into a den event.

Steve M. will find out which days the Salvation Army Bell Ringing will be held and then will pick a block of time for our pack to ring like last year.

We discussed Spring Campout options which are 1. Buffalo Naval Park 2. Wright-Patterson AFB 3. Hocking Hills S.P. 4. Kellys Island 4H Camp 5. Laurel Highlands, PA 6. Other BSA Camps 7. Mohican S.P. 8. Greenfield Village & Henry Ford Museum

It seems like Laurel Highlands, Hocking Hills S.P. and Kellys Island may be the top 3 choices based on a combination of adventure and price. Hocking Hills may be most affordable with a total fee of $100 for 2 - 60 person campsites which will need to be reserved exactly 6 months in advance of May 2, 2009 which will be Nov 2, 2008. Steve M. will find out more about Laurel Highlands from Larry the Scout Master for Troop 327 since they have camped there. Leaders agreed that Kellys would be cool because of ferry rides. However ferry rides will be the majority of the cost for the Kellys Island site. Pete found out more on Greenfield Village and sent it to leaders on 10/6/08. We need to decide before next committee meeting if Hocking Hills is still in running since our next meeting is on Nov. 2.

Reflections from Lake Leitchfield 9/26/08 to 9/28/08

Summary of our Fall Camp 2008 by Peter Buchanan:

As the last 2 years have drifted by, Den and Pack events have changed much in my mind. Sometimes they have been eagerly anticipated, others not so much. The fall campout this year was one I was not eagerly anticipating. Rather I was worried about the improbability of safely supervising 20 or so boys in the great outdoors.

But Friday afternoon, when a young Bear Scout swept into the house in cloud of books, backpacks and excitement about the coming weekend, I shook off the lingering worries and pointed myself at the job of loading up the car with a trunk full of gear we would need.

He was eager to help and the job was done before we knew it. The road trip was short and minutes later the trunk was open and spilling forth a rainbow of tent parts, sleeping bags, pillows, packs, fishing rods, papers and various toys. Trunks and tailgates we exploding with the same results all around us. Like a little ant colony cleaning up a forgotten morsel, the campers eventually moved the gear to our new home

Somehow our little tribe managed to move in, build tents, and gather firewood in time for dinner. A course of pasta and salad quietly and magically appeared just before the light started fading. All the hustle and bustle changed course towards it. In short order the feast was reduced to leftovers. The resulting mess somehow all found it’s way to the trash bags. Camp fires were brought to life as the sun set and still the boys happy feet careened around the camp unfettered by the rules of home.

I worried. Someone was bound to get hurt. They should be corralled for something constructive. There was so much left to do. Each boy needed to be accounted for. Fortunately, no one was crying. No one was hurt. But this is what it was all for, so that they could build memories together. They were the ones who knew best how to do that. My pool of stress started to drain away, but ever so slowly. A night hike was just the thing to wear them down a little bit. And sure enough, they seemed slightly more ready for a reasonable bed time than in years past when it was done.

Saturday emerged from under heavy eyelids to soon. Young voices shouting across the campsite made sure that sleep was long gone. But bleary eyes were soon cleared by hot coffee and the warmth of revived campfires. And it only got better. Sausage and eggs were soon sizzling on nearby griddles and one monstrous frying pan. The aroma teased us as we lined up and the taste, met all my expectations.

Good food has a way of calming restless spirits. Sure enough, the restless and hungry Bears were calmed and content enough to focus on the tasks of the day. Co-operation seemed to be a common agreement with them. Quickly a new line up was established. The following inspection went well. The boys themselves picked the one with the sharpest uniform. Oaths and allegiance were vowed in almost-solemn unison. Again enthusiastic spirits reigned as the boys picked out and practiced their evening skits. The energy with which they practiced over and over again was inspiring. It's hard not to feel pride when that many boys work so well and so hard together. But I was just a director. The quality of behavior instilled in these boys was not my handiwork. Great kids are the loving work of great parents. I am honored to be entrusted with their care for these brief times.

It soon became evident where all the enthusiasm was coming from. These Scouts were bubbling with anticipation of testing their skills at marksmanship. The archery range was first on our morning march. I am frequently surprised by these boys and though a couple had to be sent from the range temporarily, absolute quiet fell among them when the current group was firing. I noted the day in my calendar accordingly. Though the target backboards looked like pin cushions for the blind and as many arrows missed as hit the boards, a couple still managed to find their way inside the target circles. It was enough to allow the boys to march away victorious.

The rifle range was just as intense. It is surprising how much focus and discipline they can have when they realize the gravity of what they have in their hands. It is also sometimes surprising that their fun can sometimes come as quietly as possible. Again the guidance of great parents was crucial in pruning out the danger and still letting the boys enjoy themselves.

When the day turned wet and gray, the boy’s hopes remained undiminished. The fish were not biting much in Lake Leitchfield but most sons and dads never-the-less enjoyed the time together. Even the slightest line tugs eventually disappeared even as the rain relented. But we were really okay with leaving the fish unbothered in the lake. It felt to me like a good way to quietly offer our thanks to God and the land for providing us such a time and place to spend together.

Disappointment greeted some of the campers on their return. The drizzle that dampened hopes as well as scout shirts all afternoon had penetrated some of the tents and washed out the remainder of the weekend for some. Even so, most of these families hung around long enough for dinner and evening activities. And a memorable dinner it was. Small mountains of vegetables and plentiful burgers fed everyone willing to try their hand at cooking foil dinners. We all learned a few lessons in the process and most had a fine meal. The more discriminating eaters finished off the pasta from the previous night. All in all, almost everyone ended up happy and full with only a few cuts and burnt fingers.

One of the best times in any scout camp-out is the evening entertainment. The evening was started off by the opportunity for four enterprising young scouts to do what every scout dreams of... put a pie in their leaders face. Again, kudos to the creative parents and leaders for coming up with an entertaining way to encourage the boys to participate in the popcorn sales that assure our scouting future.

What followed was the venerable scouting tradition of skits. And though the skits were old to most, they were new to many and fun for all. Everyone enjoyed seeing the leaders making fools of themselves wondering what it would be like not to be a scout. And the Bears were only to happy to display their well practiced theatrical skills. It was all capped off by a camp-wide song that had most staggering around like drunken chickens gargling 'Singing in the rain...'

There was more, including s’mores, scary stories, and simply sitting and staring into the fire in the company of friends. Tired boys sat on the laps of tired dads or huddled together reviewing the day. Then a few at a time, they all retreated to the comfort of their tents and sleeping bags.

I was among the first up the next morning. I rekindled a fire and enjoyed a few minutes of silence and solitude. I offered my prayers and thanks to the Lord for blessing us with such a weekend and such fine company. Gradually the camp roused and the bustle began again. Wistful feelings for the end of the campout and the return to normal life were buried by the work and necessity of packing. Gathering, cleaning, rolling, stuffing, and a dozen trips to the car are the inevitable end these retreats. But near the end of my work, the zone of my working rhythm was gently broken by the sound of boys singing around the dying fire. 'If I were not a boy scout I know what I would be...'

They remembered every line in order from our leader skit the night before. Somehow that made my day. We've helped to give them a time they'll remember. We've done something good and perhaps this is one of the things for which, at the end of our time, our Lord will say 'Well done'. Thank you my friends for all you did to make it happen. I am humbled by how much work it took and how dedicated everyone was to it. It is a privilege knowing your children and yourselves.

2008 Fall Campout

We held our Fall Campout this past weekend (9/26,27,28) for TWO nights for the first time ever! It was a huge success with more activities than ever before. The boys did BB guns, archery and fishing in addition to completing some specific activities with their dens. They all pitched in to help make the whole camping experience fun.
So many thanks to the organizing leaders, especially Steve M. for buying and bringing most of the food. The Kozars provided an excellent pasta meal Friday night and the Scouts had a ton of fun assembling their hamburger ala foil diners and cooking them on the fire Saturday night.

2008 Cub Scout Day Camp

This year's MOECOMDWS Cub Scout Day Camp theme was Holidays. So our Bear patrol picked the "Bottle Rockets" as our name. It was certainly as hot as a fire cracker at camp this year; the pool and lake were extra refreshing. Thirteen Bears, four Wolves and about eight dads participated in the fun. Amy and Cindy did an awesome job organizing the camp this year. There were absolutely NO glitches and the boys moved smoothly from station to station. We even squeezed in a game of "football sock". Footballs are not nearly as soft as socks, though.

We attended during the 2nd session which was less crowded than the first; Thursday (7/17/08) through Saturday (7/19/08). We arrived at camp by 8am and departed by 5:15pm each day, except Saturday when we arrived at 1pm and departed at 8pm after a dinner and skit program together. We especially enjoyed old staffer Dave's rendition of the Lee Pittle Thrigs. Although the previous year's RinderCella was hard to beat.

Our new Tigers enjoyed Tiger Day at camp Butler. Kids entering first grade in the Fall are eligible to attend Tiger Day before starting school (at the end of their kindergarten career). This is typically held each July and includes a tour of BB guns, archery and swimming.

Pack Picnic:Meet at 6pm on 6/6/08 at Hudson Springs Park, the second pavilion. Bring your hat and neckerchief to hand off to the younger Cub Scouts moving up if you don't need to keep them. Parents should pick up hats and neckerchiefs for next year's ranks for their sons. Parents, please bring a side-dish or dessert to the picnic.
Year pins will also be handed out at the picnic.

Pinewood Derby Time Change

Due to many of our Scouts participating in the PTO Pancake Breakfast, we are starting the race at 1pm. Here's the schedule:

11:30am -- setup crew (any volunteers are welcome to help decorate and setup)

12:30pm -- families arrive and vote on their favorite cars.

1pm -- race starts

3pm - done

Check-in / weigh-in is the night before the Derby from 6 to 8pm.
Optional Practice run is 2/23 from 10am to 12:30pm; stop in and check out how your car runs.

Pinewood Derby Purpose & Rules

Purpose
There's nothing wrong with wanting to build the fastest pinewood derby car you can. But it is important to remember why the Pinewood Derby races exists. The Pinewood Derby was started to promote learning, competition, and sportsmanship.
Learning is an important part of the pinewood derby races. The Cub Scout should not only learn about such concepts as friction and gravity, but they should learn how to work with power tools safely. Depending on the experience of the Cub Scout, it may be necessary for adult supervision while building the pinewood derby car. This is a great way for an adult and a Cub Scout to spend time together.
In competition, there is always a person that wins and a person that loses. Competition drives us to do our best. By participating and competing, we broaden our knowledge, skills, and become a better person. The only loser is the person that refuses to better him or herself.
Sportsmanship involves both following the rules and how you behave at the pinewood derby. No matter how your car performs, you want to behave in a manner that will allow you to feel good in days to follow.
Rules

1. The Pinewood Derby Committee has final say or interpretation of all rules and regulations.

2. All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows:
a) The car must have been made during the current year (the year in which the derby is held).
b) The width of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.
c) The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
d) The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces (5.0000).
e) The wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles) may NOT be changed from the kit body distance of 4-1/4”.
f) Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be as provided in the BSA kit. Only Official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used. Wheels maybe slightly sanded to remove the mold projection form the tread. This light sanding is the only wheel modification allowed. Beveling, tapering, wafering, or lathe turning of the wheels is prohibited (The ribs on the wheel sides MUST remain intact).
g) Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
h) The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
i) Any details added must be within length, width, and weight limits.
j) The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices or other propulsion.
k) No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
l) The front end of the car must rest against the ‘car side’ of the starting pin. No portion of the car can be past the ‘car side’ of the starting pin.

3. Car weigh-in and inspections will be done on the Friday before Derby Day from 6 pm to 8 pm. Once a car has met the weight requirements and passed inspection, the car will be officially checked-in. Once a car has been officially checked-in, the car will not be handled by the driver until his car is ready to race in his first race. The cars will remain locked-up in the Hudson United Methodist Church overnight. On race day the cars will be moved by Pinewood Derby Race Officials to the Pit Area.

4. Before the Derby, the drivers will be allowed in the Pit Area to review and vote on the cars for various categories (Most Aerodynamic, Best Design, etc.)

5. Prior to racing in his first race, each driver will be allowed to apply lubricant to his wheels and axles in the pit area only. A table in the pit area will be set-up for this purpose. Only dry powered lubrication, such as graphite, maybe used.

6. Each heat will be announced. Drivers will report to the starting line and hand their car one at a time to the starter who will place the cars on the track in their assigned lane. All other people must remain behind the barrier.

7. The starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly and than will start the race.

8. The drivers will then report to the finish line to see the results of the race.

9. The car whose nose is over the finish line first is the winner. The track timer will determine the first-, second-, third-place winners.

10. If a car leaves the track but does not interfere with the other cars, it will be allowed a second run by itself to record a time.

11. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time but without the disqualified car.

12. After the results of each heat are recorded, the drivers will take their cars and return them to the Pit Area and then return to their seats.

13. If a car suffers a mechanical problem, loss of an axle, breaks a wheel, etc. during a race and a repair can be made in a reasonable amount of time, the heat will run again. If not, the car will automatically lose the heat.

14. Cars are not to leave the race track area at any time. If a car gets damaged during a race, all repairs must be done in the pit area. Pinewood Derby Officials will be required to inspect any car after repairs have been made to any damaged car. If necessary the car will have to be re-weighed to insure that it does not exceed the maximum weight limit. If a driver takes his car out of the pit area or the race track area anytime during the derby, he will be disqualified.

15. Awards will be announced shortly after the heat for which the awards are to be given. The drivers and their partners will report to the stage for the awards as their names are called.

16. The total of number of heats will depend on the number of participants.

17. Den winners will be determined first. The first three places from each den will receive awards; however, the top 12 (number of dens times 3) will advance to the pack championship heats.

18. Awards will be presented at the end of the Pinewood Derby.
Trophies will be awarded to the following:
a. Overall 1st Place Finish
b. Overall 2nd Place Finish
c. Overall 3rd Place Finish
d. Den 1st Place Finish (A total of 4)*
e. Den 2nd Place Finish (A total of 4)*
f. Den 3rd Place Finish (A total of 4)*
g. Various Trophies based on cars design (To be determined by the scouts) (Only cars that did not win a place trophy will be eligible for these trophies)
h. All other participants will receive a ‘Participation Trophy’
i. Each participant will receive a ‘Pinewood Derby Participant’ Patch.
The top three finishers of the Pack will be invited to the District Pinewood Derby Meet to be held at Chapel Hill Mall in April.
May the best car win!

*1st & 2nd Year Webelos will be considered one den.

Fall Campout Pictures

The weather was perfect this year at our Pack Fall Campout at camp Manatoc. We started the afternoon setting up tents -- OK a LOT of tents. Then dove into a great pasta dinner, thanks to the efforts of the Kozar family.

At night, we played Ghost in the Graveyard, went on a night hike and had a S'mores around the campfire. Scouts also enjoyed the classic Scout skit "If I were not a Boy Scout" performed by our leaders.

After a great night's sleep, we arose to the smells of cooking bacon and eggs as well as a plethora of bagels, fruit, danishes, muffins, etc. Then dens participated in some team-building exercises like crossing the "river" on two boards and rope-assisted climbing. We wrapped it up with a hike through the beautiful fall colors to the old Quarry.

Fall Camp 2007

Scouts, get ready for the spectacular FALL CAMP coming October 19 and 20. We'll be staying overnight at the Valley View and Vale Edge Cabins at the Manatoc Scout Reservation. Click here for directions.

Bring a warm sleeping bag and change of clothes. There is water and electricity in the two cabins, but some might wish to stay in the Klondike shelters outside. Webelos will be staying in tents! We'll have a dinner brought in Friday night, a campfire with s'mores, then cook breakfast Saturday morning. Camp will adjourn by noon.

So bring an appetite for fun and be prepared to play some cool games!

Items to bring to the camp-out:

· Sleeping Bag and Pillow

· Scout book

· Flashlight

· Rain gear

· Change of clothes (if rain/snow is in the forecast I recommend several changes of clothes)

· Plenty of socks

· Completed Class I Medical Form for both Adults and kids (print from this link)

· Water bottle or canteen (for hiking) (There is Akron city water at the site)

· Snack (for Friday Night and hiking)

Optional Items:

· Tent (If anyone wants to tent camp instead of sleeping in the cabin – tents REQUIRED for Webelos)

· Board Games

· Any type of Craft item that the scout might want to work on (There are Kits available at Kamper City)

BSA rules prohibit the use of any type of liquid fuel type lanterns.

We will need to provide firewood for the wood fired stoves and campfire; please bring an arm load of wood with you if possible. Depending on temperatures, fires may need to be maintained through the night. This require two adults to be up at all times though out the night for fire watch.

Directions to the Valley View / Vale's Edge Cabins at Camp Manatoc

From Hudson, take Route 303 West to Old Route 8 South (right turn). Turn Right onto Truxell Road (just past Barlow). The entrance to Camp Manatoc is past Kendall Lake around the curve in the road on the right. Look for the impressive gate at the main entrance on the right-hand side of the road. Follow the road up into the camp and take the first driveway on the right to park at Valley Forge campground. Then carry gear across the main road to the Valley View and Vale Edge cabins.

2007 Webelos Resident Summer Camp

This year's Webelos Resident Camp had a movie theme to it. Each patrol was named after a particular type of movie: "The Silents", "Adventures", "Comedies", etc. We were of course, "The Comedies". Our Scouts enjoyed shooting BB guns, bow and arrows, swimming in the pool and LOTS of hiking around. This year's camp was only 2 1/2 days (one day shorter than last year) and happened concurrently with the Boy Scout Camp. The best part of the camp was seeing the corny skits, which you can always count on.

2007 Memorial Day Parade

This year's Memorial Day parade was a rolling success! Our entire Pack wore roller blades or scooters to make the long hike a little more thrilling. This year we reconstructed the parade banner; each boy pitched in to cut out letters and glue them to the banner at a pizza party. This year our troop proudly honored our soldiers fighting for our freedom in Iraq. We ask a special blessing on each of the families in our area with sons and daughters fighting this terrible war on terrorism.

2007 Spring Campout: Wright-Patterson AFB

This year we went to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on May 5 to take in the myriad of aircraft on display in Dayton, Ohio. We tent-camped on the Air Force Base near the end of the runway and got to experience a huge C-141 cargo plane take-off! This was what Scouting was about; great campfires, great skits, and a great time seeing the museum. The rain cleared off just in time for us to setup tents and the remainder of the time we had excellent weather. Cost for this trip was minimal; we even got to stop at Young's Dairy in Springfield on our way there.

This year's Pinewood Derby had quite an assortment of award-winning cars. The projection screen and big sound system helped give it a real race track feeling and fueled the excitement of the Scouts as they watched their cars compete. As always, EVERY boy received a trophy, giving all a sense of accomplishment. Thanks to the many parents who volunteered to make the hot dogs and pizza a tasty treat at the track that day!

Our fall campout this year was so well attended that we ran out of spots in the cabin. Having it the first weekend of October made for some perfect weather (compared to the Deceber "fall campout" last year).

Fall Campout 2006

Well, it's finally here...The Great Fall Campout of 2006.
We have two cabins reserved again for this camp-out. The Forester Cabins are reserved for the scouts, their fathers, and any brothers that are attending the camp-out. The Forester Cabins hold 48 people. The other cabin we have reserved is the Health Lodge. The Health Lodge is for any mothers and female siblings that will be attending this camp-out. The Health Lodge has enough beds for 18 people.

The primary purpose of this camp-out is for everyone to have fun. The secondary purpose is to give the scouts an opportunity to complete some of their requirements necessary for advancement.

Directions to the Forester Cabins at Camp Manatoc

From Hudson, take Route 303 West to Old Route 8 South (right turn). Turn Right onto Truxell Road (just past Barlow). The back entrance to Camp Manatoc is just past the Kendall Lake, labeled with a sign the says Manatoc Service Entrance. It is a small steep driveway on the right side of the road just past the camp director's house. If you want a less bumpy and steep route or want to see the impressive gate at the main entrance, just keep going on Truxell Road and you'll see it on the right-hand side of the road. Follow the road into the camp to the first road past the Administration Building. Turn left onto this road. Turn right at the first turn. There is parking directly in front of the Forester Cabins.

The Health Lodge is located between the Administration Building & the Dining Hall.

Belt Loop Links Added

The belt loops are optionally earned for each rank and are worn on the blue belt, which can be worn with the khaki uniforms (for Webelos). We had seven Webelos 1 Cub Scouts attend a beautiful 3-day, 3-night campout at Camp Manatoc (the Great Trails Council Boy Scout camp). This was JUST like real Boy Scout camp, only perfect weather and only 1/2 a week. Check out some of the great times we had:

Webelos I First Campout

We welcomed in July with our first campout as a den.
The Weather was PERFECT (Thank you, God) and the S'mores were excellent!
Wish we had more of our members there, but it was a holiday weekend...

We will have to do it again this summer. Maybe next time camp at Silver Springs in Hudson.

Remember -- everyone should be working on the Traveler Activity Badge so it is complete by the first den meeting in August. Mr. Morris and I will be signing off on the requirements, so please keep all documentation for the badge together in a packet and bring it to the first den meeting.

Webelos I Kicked Off

We had our initial Webelos parent meeting on June 21, the first day of summer; thank you all for attending! We decided to have meetings twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Mondays from 7-8:30pm. If any of those days is a holiday, we will meet the very next day (Tuesday).

Parents filled out talent surveys so we know who is interested in leading the different types of Activity Badges. Over the course of the next two years, parents will teach two Activity Badges each so our Webelos can have the opportunity to earn nearly all 20 badges. This Activity Badge Schedule will be posted on our calendar on this web site.

This year we will collect dues, starting at $20 per scout, to be used for supplies. A den treasurer is still needed to maintain this small account; contact me if interested.

Please reference the Google Calendar on this web site for meeting dates and times.
Also, make sure you read all Webelos links on this site so you are aware of the requirements and expectations of Webelos as well as us parents.

Blue & Gold Banquet

The Blue & Gold Awards banquet will be held Sunday, February 19th at the Holiday Inn at Route 8 and Hines Hill road. The entertainment will be provided by Richard, the gentleman who runs the Land of Make Believe - he does story telling an is great with kids.

We're essentially arranging the same sort of spread that was put on last year. The Holiday Inn has increased their prices from last year - its now $11 for adults and $6 for children over 3. Scouts will be free like last year. We need to have a final head count soon, so we'll be passing around a list to get a rough estimate on Friday, 1/6.

NICE campout, guys! No fights and nobody got hurt. We completed quite a few achievements with ropes, hiking and campout food. Please bring your ropes to the next meeting on 12/12 so we can review knots. Practice at home if you'd like:

Adults and Scouts: Please bring a completed (Class 1 section ONLY!) medical form

Bear and Wolf dens will bring dishwashing liquid, wash tub and wash cloth/scrubber for meal cleanup.

Each camper will bring some firewood with them if possible.

Heater will bring dustpans, brooms for cabin cleanup.

Hoban will bring ropes for Bear Den knot skills.

Den leaders should plan den activities for Saturday

Compass course for Bear Den – we will set it up Saturday morning

Popcorn was picked up Monday by Pat & Dave. Den leaders should pick up popcorn for their den by calling Dave at 330-528-0697.

January pack meeting – hand out awards. Also, troop 321 scout leaders will talk to our pack about winter camping.

Pat will call to get the reservations setup for the Buffalo Naval Park for the Pack's Spring Camp Out.

Next committee meeting is December 10th at Panera.

Bear Den Activities

11/14/2005

We had a really great meeting at the Hudson Library on Monday, 11/14 with Gwen Mayer giving us a library tour and some background on Hudson's history. Thanks to all parents who took time off to get your scout there by 5pm.

Our next meeting will be Monday, 11/28/05 at 7pm at the church. We will use this meeting to work on skits/songs for the campout and go over supplies to bring. We'll move the worship achievement meeting to 12/12.

Our goal is to have each scout DONE with all achievements before the new year. Parents, take some time these remaining weekends to complete remaining acheivements with your son!

Fall Campout

Welcome to our new web site! We will use this blog to communicate all events happening in our pack. My ultimate goal is to develop a web application and host it on our home PC, but until then, we can use blogspot.

You can use a free program called 'hello' by Picasa to upload photos from events to this blog, which I'll try to do frequently.
